Bringing new life to an old piece

February 6, 2013

While we are waiting for the  reveal of  my daughters room makeover I thought I would share a piece that I just brought into her room.

It was in much need of repair so I knew paint would look amazing on this piece.

Some may cringe when they see the before photo and wonder why I would paint such a lovely piece.

But as I said it needed much repair.

Parts of the wood were chipping off.

Some water damage too.

But since I knew what I wanted to do and was looking for a distressed piece that was going to work for my benefit.

Isn’t this a lovely piece!

This dresser was found at a thrift store.

My original intent was to paint this and sell it.But after thinking about it I could not part with it.

That mirror is not original to this piece. But was found at a thrift store too.

I painted a coat of Annie Sloan old ochre and highlighted the detailed wood appliques with old white.

I will share with you in another post how I attached the mirror.

That small display cabinet holds some photos and awards of my daughters.

I blocked it out to keep those personal photos private.

You can see how this wood was chippy on it’s own.

Painting this piece made it stand out a bit more.

Love the details on this piece.

Wait until you see the other piece I bought with this.

They go together so well!

Are you ready to see the before photo of this dresser??

002vintagedresser

You can see why I fell for this piece!

And you can sort of see the old wall color too.

I am sure you noticed it is now white 🙂

I forgot to take a before photo of the mirror. But it was the same color wood.

Hoping to reveal her room in the few days.

Today I am working on some pieces I am bringing to The crown jewels of art show

I better get back to work!

It’s beautiful, Anne! I can see why you wanted to keep it. It’s great that it worked out for use in your daughter’s room. The mirror goes with it beautifully, too. Love the color. I think Old Ochre and Old White are my favorites.

Oh Anne that is such a beautiful piece and I can see how you could not let that chippy treasure go!!!!! It will look so pretty in the room reveal. Your daughter is so cute she needed a cute dresser for her room. I love the paint color and love that mirror too. With not feeling well you really made my day with this post. I love seeing the transformation of this piece. I can’t wait to see the rest of the room reveal.

Your daughter’s dresser turned out gorgeous! I love all the carved applique detail highlighted with white. It was pretty in its original state, but just as lovely painted. I painted a little dresser the other day, myself, and love the lighter painted finish instead of the original dark stain.

The mirror you married to your dresser is a good fit with the carved detail, too. Nicely done!

Hi Anne, I used to be one of those people who poo-pooed anyone who would paint a great wood piece but i’ve learned over time that if you are going to live with it then you should be able to fix it how you like and now I have no qualms about painting any piece. In my opinion, it was pretty to begin with and it is beautiful now. Good job..Happy Weekend..Judy

ABOUT THIS BLOG

Hi I'm Anne.
I started this blog many years ago to share my passion for home decor. My tastes have changed and so did I.
We recently moved to Florida and we are starting a new chapter. My main focus on this blog has shifted. With that I'll be sharing more than home decor.
You'll see makeup tips, skincare, fashion and a little bit of decor as well. You can check out my Youtube channel as well and follow me along. I'll leave all of my older posts up as a reference. But you'll see lots of changes.
