Practice Makes Perfect A Faux Marble Table

September 27, 2015

This isn’t going to be a reveal post, but I wanted to share one of the projects I will be working on soon.

I have many projects that I need to start working on , but I am nearing the end of writing my book.

I will tell you that writing a book is so much harder than I thought it would be.

Anyway, I decided to experiment with one of my ideas on a smaller scale.

If you are trying a new technique, but you are afraid to go for it, I always advise to practice on something first.

I love the look of marble, and have been wanted to experiment using a faux technique.

I found this table several months ago.

Not knowing what I was going to do with it when I found it.

And let me tell you , this table has been painted several times already.

I started a few projects on it, and I hated the outcome of each one.

I want to try this technique on a larger scale, but before I do, I wanted to practice first.

This is the first time trying a faux marble technique.

This is not going to be a tutorial post, as soon as I finish my larger project, I will share a full tutorial.

I didn’t want to explain this twice ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, for this project I painted a coat of Heirloom Traditions Ultra Guard primer on top of my table.

I needed to completely cover up the mess I had on this table previously ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love this primer, it’s very thick, and has no odor, and it’s very easy to work it.

This table was covered with two coats.

Once I was done it was time to start my faux marble table.

I used a few craft paints, and I applied my veins with a feather, and a brush.

As I said, I will share the details on how to create a faux finish, once I complete my project.

Since I am not going to talk about how to do this, let me share what I don’t like and what I need to fix before I start on my project.

  • 1) This didn’t come out as smooth as I would like, granted I didn’t sand it before I painted it, so the pattern that I had on this table previously is showing slightly. Normally you don’t have to sand before painting using a chalk type paint. But my pattern was slightly raised. And the brush strokes from the top are visible, which really makes this look faux. Marble is very smooth.
  • 2) The color came out way too dark for what I was hoping for. I like it, but on my bigger project, I need to see more white than grey. It’s just a little too grey for me. I did use white paint, but when I was blending the paint, it started grabbing the grey way too much for what I was hoping for.
  • 3) I need to go easy on the veins. I like the simpler look of this photo.

Sorry it’s a little blurry, it’s my horrible camera acting up again, but you can see I have less veins.

Compared to this photo.

You can see why I am practicing before tackling a large project.

I do like the way my table came out but I really want a softer look, Iย  will be practicing on another practice piece before I start my big project.

See those brush stokes, I will be eliminating those.

And I think I have some ideas of how to avoid that next time.

I have shared many projects on my blog, and usually I have no hesitation to just go for it.

Usually because I know if something doesn’t turn out, I will have an easy and cheap fix.

But this would not be an easy or cheap fix, so I really need to spend a little more time practicing.

I’ll be sharing more on this soon.

Anne! I don’t know how much more practice you need because this looks like authentic marble to me! I love it! I agree with you, I think the simpler look is much better than the one with more marbling in it. You are so talented, I cannot WAIT to see your finished larger project. I already know it will be beautiful!

ABOUT THIS BLOG

ABOUT THIS BLOG

Hi I'm Anne.
I started this blog many years ago to share my passion for home decor. My tastes have changed and so did I.
We recently moved to Florida and we are starting a new chapter. My main focus on this blog has shifted. With that I'll be sharing more than home decor.
You'll see makeup tips, skincare, fashion and a little bit of decor as well. You can check out my Youtube channel as well and follow me along. I'll leave all of my older posts up as a reference. But you'll see lots of changes.
