Distressed Beadboard Wallpaper

April 22, 2014

Yes this is my ongoing saga…..the kitchen island, but this time I wanted a distressed beadboard wallpaper look.

I really want to make this work for awhile after putting so much time into it.

Since this is wallpaper I can’t sand it to distress it but decided to use a little dark wax instead.

The poly I added really turned this yellow,so first before waxing I decided to add two more coats of Vintage Market and Designs  paint color Porcelain.

This is a very pale pink, but interestingly depending on the piece you paint determines how deep the color is.

Do you remember this painting?

I used the same color as I am on my island but you can see the frame has a little more of a pink too it than my island does.

It’s a very pale pink that really does not scream pink at all even with the dark wax added.

Here is a close up shot of the paint and wax distressed.

You can see the paint crackled a little here and there to give it an authentic aged look.

Looking at this in person you can’t tell this is wall paper but it looks like old beat up beadboard.

I tried taking a photo from the other side but with the lighting you really can’t see the detail or color.

But here is a close up shot from that side.

It looks a little lighter in color because of the reflection, but you can see how the dark wax really aged this wallpaper beadboard.

Getting back to how I distressed this.

First I painted it two coats of Porcelain after it dried I used Vintage Market and Designs Grunge and Dark Umber.

What’s Grunge it is a powder that is an aging dust.

I will have to share a tutorial, but I just dipped my wax brush in the dark umber wax then dipped my wax brush into the grunge dust, tapped off the excess and applied it.

This will give it a gritty vintage look.

Vintage Market and Designs wax is very easy to work with I really love using it.

Just like the paint it has no odors at all!

And you can work with it because it takes at least 24 hours to cure.

As you work with the wax you really don’t need to hurry with it because it does not dry instantly.

This is really like working with a glaze.

You don’t want to use a heavy hand while applying this because it will all wipe off.

Vintage rose pitcher

You can distress it as much or as little as you want.

See how light it looks in a photo, now I am trying to decide if I want to distress the front or not.

Right now I like the contrast of the front of my island and the back.

Although from this photo it’s hard to tell the difference.

Just added a few new items to the shop, including this sweet pitcher.

That looks so good. I never would’ve thought to age the wallpaper. It really does look like real beadboard. I’ve never heard of that aging dust before. That looks like a great product.
