Farmhouse Cottage Style Living Room Revisited

September 17, 2013

My living room is a mixture of farmhouse cottage style. But it did not start out looking that way.
When I first started blogging almost two years ago my living room was anything but farmhouse style.
The sofa was the biggest eye sore with it’s 1980’s tapestry pattern.
It was and still is not in our budget to replace it.Especially for a room we rarely use.
The fist thing that was changed in this room was the wall  paint color.
Here is what my living room looked like two years ago with a gold paint color.

EEK! Pretty bad I know!

Ah the lovely tapestry…… the dark wood…a touch of white painted furniture.

And taking the photo with a flash does did not make this room look any better.

Here are more photos of the before.

Please someone turn on the lights….it’s dark in here!

Yes even with all of our windows it was still dark.

It is really hard to look back at these photos!

As I said the first thing I did was paint the room to add some light!

I was always afraid of a white room.I thought it would look sterile….and too bright.

But if you chose the right white color it actually adds warmth to a room and light!

And with white walls it is easy to add bits of color to change things and I like change!

This is one of the first photos after the reveal.

That sofa slip cover is from Ugly sofa.It is amazing to see how adding that slip cover changed this room.

And yes adding the white paint brought in lots of light!

That rocking chair was also given a makeover.

I painted the burlap rocking chair with Annie Sloan Old ochre.I found burlap coffee bean sacks at farm and fleet.I used two bags to reupholster the chair. That  French chair next to my vintage door was also  reupholstered. For this chair I used   painters tarp fabric from Menard’s. And was painted with Annie Sloan old white.

I also added that little French pleather chair to this room to anchor the seating area.Using Annie Sloan old orche.

It was a thrifty 4.00 find and one of my favorite chairs!

I came across an old chippy farmhouse table. It was too tall so I cut the legs off and now use it as a coffee table in this room.

One of my weaknesses……old farmhouse tables.

I have a hard time walking away from these old farm tables when I find them!

What a thrill to be able to use this as a coffee table.

Very recently I painted the wood staircase.

I was tired of the orange stain and wanted it to flow better with the room.

I do enjoy the wood pieces of  furniture in this room.

That sewing machine is a family heirloom.

And my cabinet was found years ago at a thrift shop.

I love my white ironstone dishes next to the contrast of the wood.

Of course I had to add a little bling in here too!

Just like the other rooms in my home I am always tweaking and changing things.

But right now I am very satisfied with this room.

Even though it is not a room we use much it is the first room you see as you walk in my home.

It is important to have that room looking nice as guests are welcomed into your home.
I hope you have been visiting Live Creatively Inspired.

Everyday will be a new post up sharing some fall inspiration.

On Friday you can join in on a linky party.

It is kind of fun to see before pictures to be reminded how far we’ve come and how much has been accomplished. Your living room looks so pretty with all of your makeovers, paint, and other changes.

Wow your room has come a long…..way! I love the shape of your couch and the slipcover looks great! Love all the changes you made and the staircase looks much better painted white. Isn’t it amazing how our style evolves after blogging? I’ve been blogging for a little over 2 years and I cringe at what my first photos looked like and boy what was I thinking with a red living room? As creative human beings we’re always evolving and changing. I’m following along to see what other changes you come up with.

I am in the process of redoing my living room now. I have the same couch as you. You mentioned “Ugly Sofa” slipcovers. Do you really like them and were they very expensive? I’ll send you my before if I ever get finished. I am painting a brick fireplace too. So wish me luck.

Wow, what a difference you have made!

We have no rooms in our little cottage that are not used – including what I call our “garden room” outdoors.

At our former home, no one ever sat in the living room, yet it was the first room anyone saw, so it always had to be perfect.

Anne, it’s great to see the evolution! Love your bright white today room, though there were still some good things that work in the old one. I could see the rose painting somewhere in your home…:)

Your room has really changed over the last year or so. It looks so charming now! I agree that there is so much versatility with a white room. You will not tire of it as fast now that you have more options in there.

Your room looks amazing! Not sure if I am more in love with the chandelier, the redone rocker or the farmhouse table. I couldn’t find a thing that I didn’t love! Thanks so much for linking up to Throwback Thursday!

Wow, that is a big change! You’re right about the slipcover, it makes a huge difference! I had a lot of gold color in my home too and still have one room left but I’m gradually
    “lightening” things up!

What a beautiful space you created Anne!!!
I LLOVE your china cabinet with the ironstone in it – it’s the perfect bit of color against the white walls – and that slip cover – I SO wish I could make one of them to cover my horrific colored couch!
    Gorgeous transformaton 🙂

Hi Anne, I’m a first time visitor and new follower. You’ve done a great job with your living room; a really wonderful transformation. Painting the walls and staircase white did so much to brighten and liven up the room. Very classy. I like what you did with the chairs, the slipcovered sofa, the farmhouse table cut down as a coffee table (I’m drawn to farmhouse tables, too). Love the white ironstone with the antique china cabinet. I’s all great. I have a monthly blog party Every Room In The House. This month we’re partying in The Living Room, and I’d love it if you’d come and share your inspiration living room with us. Here’s the link: http://www.ajoyfulcottage.com/2014/02/every-room-in-house-party-2.html
    I hope you’ll join us. ~ Nancy

ABOUT THIS BLOG

Hi I'm Anne.
I started this blog many years ago to share my passion for home decor. My tastes have changed and so did I.
We recently moved to Florida and we are starting a new chapter. My main focus on this blog has shifted. With that I'll be sharing more than home decor.
You'll see makeup tips, skincare, fashion and a little bit of decor as well. You can check out my Youtube channel as well and follow me along. I'll leave all of my older posts up as a reference. But you'll see lots of changes.
