I Have A Dark Secret

September 21, 2014

I have a dark secret to share, this is not easy ,in fact it’s something I have been hiding from you all.

Yes I have been keeping a secret from you all but today I thought I would come clean.

I am a little nervous at what you are going to think, when you see what I am about to share.

how to make a shabby chic memo board-57

This is my family, and if you notice I don’t share my whole room.

Yes there is more to this room then what I share.

Are you ready…..wait are you sitting or standing…you might want to sit down.

The reason I have not shared this whole room is because of this…

how to make a shabby chic memo board-58

Can you see it peeking on the side?

Really you want to see more….are you sure??

Okay I warned you!

how to make a shabby chic memo board-61

Yep that’s what I have been hiding…my dark secret!

Okay I know you are looking at that and saying….why not just paint it!?

Hmmm well did you notice how big that piece is?

And did you notice that huge tv on that piece?

To paint that lovely cabinet would require me taking that tv off and unhooking all the wiring for the tv and speakers….hmmm nope ain’t gonna happen.

Someday this will be gone and it won’t be the eyesore that it is for me.

Sorry honey…..my taste has changed…but it’s okay I can deal with it.

You are wonderful about all of my pink and lace….I can certainly learn love deal with that cabinet.

So next time you see my family room photos that look like this.

You know what I am hiding on the other side ๐Ÿ˜‰

Shhhhh it’s our secret!

Ok Anne I love the cabinet. Yep I love it. I would chalk paint that to a pretty white and wax it. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it would be so worth it. I love the shape and how great a piece of furniture this is. Really a little paint and you will have a super fantastic piece that you will just love. Maybe some new hardware or some old knobs added would look so cool. I think you are missing a great opportunity with not painting this.

$100 and 2 days and it would be painted! You can always get rid of it in 6 months but I think it would “blend” if you painted it AS pure white no distressing no dark wax.

Ha yes it could look better antiquechase, but after painting my kitchen cabinets,I know how much of a pain it would be not only to paint it,but take that heavy tv off and disconnect the wires….nope it’s not happening.

That is a very nice piece. Maybe you could paint everything except where the TV goes & put a nice curtain in there to cover that area. When the TV goes out, then you could paint it. I understand not wanting to unhook all those wires.

I think we all hate having to deal with large TV’s in our family room, but it is a necessary item in a house! If you’re not planning on painting it, what do you think you will do? Have you considered having your husband hang it on the wall for you? Then you could put a piece of painted furniture underneath it. That would look good.

I have a corner piece like that. I left it for about five years. It drove me nuts!!! I took pictures of half the room like you do…lol. First I painted around the screen…but that drove me even nuttier! So finally we took the screen out. It’s the best thing I ever did. But….I still hate that huge piece of furniture sitting in the corner all pretty, and white. I’m hoping that some day (in the near future) that big piece will be gone! I’m not, fortunately, holding my breath.

I think most of us have some “deep dark secrets” in our home. In fact, I seem to have way too many. I am so happy that I will have some time this year to fix many of my house horrors. It would be nice to have a bigger budget to work with.

I would like to invite you & your readers to see some photos from my trip to Provence and my “French” Autumn Wreath on my blog at: simplysantabarbara.blogspot.com

That’s funny, Anne! My entire house is a big dark secret….hence the reason there are so few pictures of it. I used to have big puffy shabby chic couches that were gorgeous (then came 3 boys), I had vintage little girl’s dresses hung from pink and white shabby wall hangers {then the boys came}, I had crystal and china and porcelain on antique dressers and vintage photos in their original frames hung on my walls (and then the boys came)…..now my house is a giant jungle gym and I sometimes sigh and miss its pretty days….but…..I’m thankful the boys are here and my life is a bit crazy right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

You are too funny! I am glad you have opened your heart to hold both the beautiful and the BOLD, especially for your hubby. Since I live alone, I would paint it and just leave a tiny bit of wooden frame around the TV. Just like you I wouldn’t mess with the TV wires…they scare me…hehehe. Love your blog and all of you that you put into it!

Actually your dark secret is somewhat of a relief to me. I think probably quite a few of us have a piece of furniture or something that we would like to change and just can’t for whatever reason. I have an ugly green sofa in my living room. I have been dreaming of an Ikea sofa with a white slipcover but my husband is convinced that it will be the most uncomfortable piece of furniture in the world and he is not all about putting it together. So…. I feel better about my house knowing that I’m not alone in having an imperfect room in which to relax. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you for revealing your secret!

Hi Anne. I knew you couldn’t have a REAL dark secret!! You could change that beauty out in a second. I want you to do it because I’m struggling with the same thing in my TV room and would love to know how it’s done.. There is nothing more scary (to me) then messing with all those TV wires..It really is a nice piece of furniture though..Happy Monday..Judy

I agree with the consensus, I would paint only the exterior and leave the interior as is, this way you won’t have to remove your tv and all the wiring. But then again, it’s easy for us to tell you to paint it!!!!

Boy that subject sure got lots of comments. If we have to live with somebody else (namely a husband) that doesn’t like or won’t understand certain concepts then we have to put up with things we don’t like .I got rid of couch I really didn’t like in May and bought one I do love in it’s place. Hubs was mad but he didn’t sit on it and mind how it looked in our l/r. It was a big ugly, cumbersome sofa that looked like a big dark hole in room. I bought my couch at Habitat for pretty good price and it’s like new, it’s even a sofa bed. I’m happy now since we got the l/r painted finally after 8 yrs in this house. Now I’d so love to get rid of hubs very ugly chair and the very ugly carpet. I’d just start ripping carpet out and live with linoleum covered with a rug, (same thing for our bedroom). Getting rid of hubs chair he could sit on nice comfy club chair with foot stool. But he won’t so I’m stuck with his chair until I can find a better one at Habitat maybe.
Your entertainment center is quite a large one. If you decided to paint it you put tape on each tv wire and then on the place it goes so you know where wires go when you’re done. I’ve done it and our entertainment center is not half size yours is, just very heavy. Luckily the tv is quite moveable. Nice thing about flat screens. Isn’t that what your tv is? Our tv stand is black not working too well since we painted things lighter. Someday I’ll switch it out on another table to paint it. Hubs will squak but I paid for it so I can paint it, someday. His chair was free from a client of our daughters’ but that was 9 1/2 yrs. ago and it’s really had it’s day and then some, lol. It’s ugly period.
When it comes down to it your entertainment center isn’t that bad so you don’t have to hide it anymore. You’ve come clean with us all. Bless your heart. Will your hubs let you paint it? Really would look much better white.
    Happy week Anne

ABOUT THIS BLOG

Hi I'm Anne.
I started this blog many years ago to share my passion for home decor. My tastes have changed and so did I.
We recently moved to Florida and we are starting a new chapter. My main focus on this blog has shifted. With that I'll be sharing more than home decor.
You'll see makeup tips, skincare, fashion and a little bit of decor as well. You can check out my Youtube channel as well and follow me along. I'll leave all of my older posts up as a reference. But you'll see lots of changes.
