Screened In Porch

May 6, 2014

Well today is the day I finally reveal our screened in porch.

This has been a dream of ours for many, many years.

When we moved here almost 8 years ago I told my husband if we can’t do a screened in porch then I don’t want to do a patio.

I think patios are great, but I never really enjoy eating outdoors with bugs especially bee’s and mosquitoes.

So last fall my husband and I contacted several companies and started the process of our dream.

You can read the beginning stages HERE.backyard2

This was our sad little yard last fall, and that stoop was our patio.

I did the best I could with a garden, but knowing we would eventually build our dream I went a little easy and simple for a garden.

The process was pretty fast, and it was agonizing looking at this room all winter knowing we had to wait to enjoy it.

backyard1

We did not want a big room just one big enough to enjoy meals and sit and relax.

I will still be tweaking the way it looks, but if I waited until I was done tweaking I would probably never share it.

Welcome to our screened in porch.

I started a little planting and it will be a process, everything looks so little now.

But I know a year from now things will start to really grow.

We are already thinking about adding trees and privacy shrubs.

screened in porch shabby chic

Let’s go inside and take a look around.

screen porch

Before I go any farther let me explain, see that rug on the floor that was a curbside find last week.

We can’t paint the floors until the wood is all dried out, they said I should be good to go in the fall.

In the mean time I did not want to see the plain wood so I added this rug.

I painted it today,what a surprise I painted a rug.

This is what the rug looked like before.

rug

You can see it has lots of stains, not a problem for outdoors but I still wanted it a little nicer looking.

I just used exterior latex paint in the cheapest brand I could find because this is just temporary and rolled it on.

painting a rug

Yes of course you noticed that it’s pink,a very pale pink.

This is some sort of natural fiber rug,a Pottery Barn rug that has seen it’s last days.

It grabbed a little more in some areas than in others, but that’s okay it gives it a bit of a shabby look to it.

This rug  size works perfectly in this room and as I said it was free, well with the exception of the paint which was 17.00.

I still have some paint left for a future project.

I was on a tight budget for this room.

The table and chairs were found last fall.

You can read how I transformed this thrifty set HERE.

The chairs were 22.50 and the table 4.99.

Shortly after finding that set I also  found more iron chairs, love them because they bounce.

shabby chic porch

Those chairs were….4.99 each! They were black I just spray painted them white.

Those pillows were free from the curbside treasures found last week.

They add a pop of color and are comfortable on your back too!

The bench and statue were my recent finds both from Lucky Junk.

chippy statue

Isn’t this piece amazing,I fell in love with that chippy pink paint.

Yes it was love at first sight.

bench

I enjoy listening to the sound of a fountain,I added one that I have had for years but was not using.

Not crazy about the look or color in this room, but for now it will do.

cottage porch

It’s propped on a wood bench I know you have seen in many photos and a chippy old window makes a great backdrop for it too.

I wanted it to stay light in this room so instead of staining the room walls we had them painted, with the exception of the ceiling which is pine.

pine ceiling

I love the rustic look of the ceiling,we chose simple farmhouse style lights.

And yes that is a ceiling fan/light,which will be great on evenings that are warm with no breeze.

side patio

It’s nice having this side porch too,as you can see we need to add a grill.

And I am looking for a hose caddy, just haven’t found what I am looking for yet.

That old wash sink is my planter for my Basil and Rosemary.

And that lattice will be the anchor for my climbing rose plant,it’s still trying to break through the ground.

We had a bitter cold winter and I lost three of my rose bushes.

I guess I am lucky I did not lose more.

This has been an amazing addition to our home.

For 8 years we never enjoyed our yard,it’s so nice to sit outside now and enjoy our meals.

I told my husband I feel like I am on vacation when we are outside on the porch.

It’s sort of magical but you feel so relaxed and at ease sitting outside enjoying nature.

Here is a little peek at what I am working on next.

We have a sun room in the back of the house, off the living room . We use it a lot for eating on nice days and for just hanging out. It opens to the patio and the gardens…
    Your screen is so pretty.

Your new screened porch is lovely! I know you must be enjoying it now that it’s finished. I like the shape of your chairs that go with the table. I also like the little patio area you have just outside the screened porch. That’s all going to look so good once your flowers bloom and your plants mature.

What a wonderful addition to your home! We added a screened porch two years ago and love it. We, too, feel like we’re on vacation when we’re out there. I used to have those bouncing metal chairs and sold them. I really regret selling them!

That looks amazing. Have you considered adding a decorative rain container/barrel? They make some really nice looking ones and you already have the gutters set up. I know you’re going to have lots of fun with your yard now.

I am so happy for you to have that screened in porch! I think everyone should have one. Love the pink rug….I have one that I’ve been wanting to paint since I spilled white paint on it. I think I’ll do that today after I go buy a roller. Your porch is beautiful!

Hi Anne: Some time ago, I signed up for your post to come directly into my in box by e-mail and FINALLY, today it came through, so now I’ll be able to keep up with you again. WOW, how lucky you are to have that screened porch. We have the small porch in the Secret Garden that we are hoping to put some screening up this summer. We love to eat out there and we don’t have too big a problem with bugs, but the birds are our big one. They just seem to drop off their little ones and then, when they are all grown, they keep coming back. Your’s is looking so beautiful and relaxing. I can’t wait.Have a wonderful Mother’s Day..Judy
