Get Clean Edges Without Using Painters Tape

February 5, 2014

How would you like to paint your walls and get clean edges without using painters tape.

Today is not about pretty photos, but sharing this information on how to get a nice clean edges when painting walls.

Yes at one time I used painters tape,I would apply it to my walls in the areas I did not want to get covered with paint.

But I found that One it took way too much time to tape.

And Two it costs quite a bit for all of that tape.

Most importantly I never really got clean edges.

The paint would still bleed through the tape, and sometimes the paint would come off with the tape.

Don’t get me wrong there is a need for painters tape.

But when painting a wall, you don’t need to use painters tape.

This is my chalk board wall in my kitchen, I thought this would be a good wall to share as an example because as you can see I used a dark black paint next to a white wall.

This would be difficult to do not using the right brush, and even using tape would not be easy.

Those little specks of white is the chalk on the dark wall.

You can see I got a very clean edge using my angle brush next to the white painted wall by simply using a good quality angle brush.

It’s hard to get a good photo doing this myself but you can see how important it is using an angle brush.

My favorite is a Purdy brush, they work great and clean up well too!

I promise you if you try using an angle brush you will never use tape again!

It makes painting so much easier, and faster too!

When I paint a wall I start doing the cut out work first using my angle brush, then I go back and use my roller.

I also use my angle brush when painting furniture too.

This was not a sponsored post, all opinions of using a Purdy brush are that of my own .

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have wasted so much money on brushes. Next one will be a “Purdy!”

Great tip!! I am going to attempt to paint my kitchen walls – will definitely be purchasing a Purdy brush (always good things about them) as I do not own an angled one. Thanks

I’ve used PURDA brushes for ages! Love ’em – they’re the best! As a professional painter, you never have time to use tape and as you said, these brushes allow you to get great lines, no bleed and great results without the tape!

Yes that tape takes so much Time Jan and it really does not get a clean edge.

When i was *much* younger I wasted so much time and effort with painter’s tape and cheap brushes. Purdy brushes ROCK and they last forever and a day. I agree I get the best, cleanest line with an angled Purdy brush and no more taping. It’s easier for doing along the ceiling as well. 🙂 Great tip!

I use a tool that wallpaper hangers use to create a straight line when I paint. It’s called a trim guide. It is long enough that you can paint quite a bit before having to move it. It works for ceilings and it works for painting up to wood trim and the wood trim itself. It is very inexpensive, has a stainless steel blade that cleans up very easily and durable enough that you will likely never have to replace it. Google wallpaper trim guide for purchasing details. Happy painting!

I only use painter’s tape occasionally. I will if I am using oil based paints. Most of the time, I free hand it. It takes so long to tape something off. Good post!

Is there any other brand than Purdy!? 🙂

Isn’t it amazing Christine how using a good brush can really make a difference between a good paint job and a bad one.

This is exactly what I do! I am very slow but with a good angle brush I can avoid taping off all my woodwork. I can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve behind the “shop the event” link at the top. Looks very fun!
