Kitchen Chalkboard Wall

June 2, 2013

Yep you read the title right.I now have a kitchen chalkboard wall.

I have been wanting a chalkboard in my kitchen for awhile. But I really don’t have the room for it.

And then I started seeing walls painted with chalkboard paint all over pinterest.

I know that there is an art to this but I need lots of practice.

When I started thinking about doing a chalkboard wall I decided that I wanted to have inspirational quotes.

Something happy and cheerful to look at everyday.

But also something that could be changed often.

Hence the chalkboard wall.

kitchenchalkboardNEWNEW

It will be changing all the time with quotes and art!
My daughter added some of her art too! See her Bonjour ….Eiffel tower and flowers?

kitchenchalkboardwallfarmhouseNEW

I did not use Annie Sloan paint for this.Yes you can use it for the walls.

Instead  I decided to use RustOleum chalkboard paint. It comes in a few other colors besides black. But I chose the black as I do have a little black in my kitchen.

I only did two coats of paint.I did not do the inside of the cut out where the refrigerator is nor did I do the cut out shelf.

Leaving these as is look fine to me.No point of doing those since I won’t be adding any art work to them.

And it is only paint if I get tired of this I just have to paint right over it.Yes it will take a few extra coats but no biggie.

This plant is doing so well here! It must get the perfect lighting!

peaches

Peaches are delicious right now!Love this time of the year for fruit!

One thing to remember after you paint is the season the wall.

If you do not season the wall you will end up with image burns that will not come off when erasing.

To season a wall lay a piece of chalk flat against the wall.First rub horizontally and then vertically.Make sure you get all of the chalk painted wall. Then you can use a damp cloth to wipe it off or a dry cloth.

Also make sure to dip your chalk in water as you write. The font or design will be much bolder.

It will look faint but as it dries you will see the difference.

I really love this mason jar water dispenser. And I was planning on using my vintage ball jars. But decided not to because I have used them for flowers and I don’t know it just seemed a little yucky thinking about the fact that I am drinking out of something that also was holding flowers.

So I went over to our farm and fleet store and found the special edition blue ball jars.I bought two sets of these. They are a bit brighter than the vintage ones. But I have to tell you I actually like them better.

The color is so rich and vibrant!

blueballwaterjar

It really brings a nice pop of color. And now with the chalkboard wall it really looks warm too!

kitchen skirt

And I changed my sink skirt.I was having issues with that rod sticking out too far.It was driving me nuts.So I am back to the tension rod.

And yes I did sew these by hand.I still do not have a sewing machine.I really need to get one.It would make my life so much easier.

I won’t be showing you a close up.It actually looks fine but I am sure a seamstress would cringe at my hack job.

These flowers are from our local farmers market.I don’t know what they are called but I love the soft purple color.

Did you notice I have a bamboo mats on the floor! I have wanted these for awhile and saw them on decor steals a while back.
Now I want to get the larger one to go under my farmhouse table!

bamboomat

This was a pretty small project.I have a few other small projects I am working on and a few others that will be started in the fall.I am enjoying the time off with my daughter.Although the weather has been summer like one day and fallish the next! As in today it is only going to be in the low 60’s burrrr!

Hi Anne, first of all Thank you for always brightening m’y days with you beautiful ness and comments that warm my heart. As for your Kitchen I ador it and wish I were a neighbor so I can sit over a cup of tea and take in all that inspires you. I see what you mean about no room for a blackboard and yet your wall is a perfect place to add the right kind of attention to it.
Did you know that Martha Stwart does chalk paints as well, and she does one in GRAY! It’s a softer less messy feel for those who tire of clutter or feeling as if the blackboard stands out to much.
I too have to live with words ones that inspire my days be it on hanging art, a muse board that holds inspiring thoughts and objects or a chalk board of sorts.
I think on down the line you could go verit with a gray board, or another coat of blackboard or just primer that wall and ,then paint it off, you have a fun fix to all that your kitchen inspires.
It’s truly a kitchen to love, it almost feels gally style with the long center island in the middle and the long shape to the rooms view from here.
Everything looks so magazine ready and soulfully inspirings, a kitchen to love.
Your little box reminds me of mine.

Have a beautiful Sunday and a month of June that inspires.

    Xx

I have always loved your kitchen and now the chalkboard wall makes me love it more. I have no big wall in my little kitchen so I just have a small chalkboard that is part of an old clock.

    Enjoy your new chalkboard.

    Anne,
Your chalk board wall came out so cute. I have used the Rustoleum chalk paint and it is great and pretty inexpensive to get at Home Depot. I use Windex on my chalk boards to erase and they come out really nice and not signs of what you had written on there. I had seen that on HGTV. I am finishing up some new changes to my kitchen too. Hope to post them soon.

I really love your kitchen. It’s so bright and cheery with all the white. And the turquoise glass adds a great pop of color. Everything is just lovely!

Anne, really great! and with that pop of blue, you are right on!! Thanks for the tip about dipping chalk in water before writing. I’m going to try and see if that works on my board. It is a piece of real slate out of an old school house and it is really hard to write on. Maybe that will help..Happy Monday..Judy

Love love love this Anne! I wish I could do this. I have no walls in my kitchen….really! All cabinets and windows so I put a framed chalkboard on the pantry door. I adore that sweet cut out over your fridge (and the cow picture) I bought that same bamboo mat at Luckett’s for my kitchen sink. Just finally put it down yesterday. Your kitchen is the sweetest! xo

I love this, I really want a chalkboard wall, but my kitchen is too small, so I’ve been thinking about doing a wall in the hall. It needs a bit of drama anyway, and guests can write something on the way in !
    Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi I'm Anne.
I started this blog many years ago to share my passion for home decor. My tastes have changed and so did I.
We recently moved to Florida and we are starting a new chapter. My main focus on this blog has shifted. With that I'll be sharing more than home decor.
You'll see makeup tips, skincare, fashion and a little bit of decor as well. You can check out my Youtube channel as well and follow me along. I'll leave all of my older posts up as a reference. But you'll see lots of changes.
