Yes I decided to paint those cabinets above the desk. And Yes I did take out the built in.It was much too small for me as far as room.I could hardly put anything in it.Where do I start?Lets start with the desk.
My friend posted on her facebook that someone had a desk if anyone wanted it for free.
Um yes sure I’ll take it.I got in touch with the women and she said this was her husbands childhood desk. She had no where to put it so she was giving it away. When I took this desk I was going to paint it and sell it.Yes it was just old wood nothing to look at.Anyway I started to wonder what it would look like in my kitchen.I was looking for a desk and this one was free! I measured it yep it will work!Taking the built in out was very easy I did it myself. That chair was found at a barn sale.I love it and goes perfect with my desk. This did have a leather top but it was in poor shape. Not sure if you can see but there are wheels on this desk.I was going to take these off but I actually like the fact that I can move this freely if needed.I painted the chair and desk with several coats of Pure white. The first coat left a lovely freckled red.Yes it was bleeding through the varnish.I painted another coat hoping it would stop and it did not.So I googled to see what I could do and I found this sweet blog The Purple Painted Lady. She suggested using a shellac to stop the bleeding.I used one coat and proceeded to paint. But it was still bleeding through.I had faith this would work so this time I did two more coats and then repainted and the bleed through stopped!Next time I am doing two coats right away.Visit her site for suggestions and how to on this.Just make sure to follow the manufacturers instructions.Use in a ventilated area preferably outside! Where a respirator, goggles gloves be smart this is strong stuff! It dried very fast and I was able to paint right away. After looking at it with pure white it looked too white and I wanted to see a difference with my cabinets and this desk.I then painted it Old white with Annie Sloan paint.I finished it by waxing with fiddes wax.I love the hardware and wanted to keep it but I did not want it brass so I did paint over that too.
See that cubby below the cabinets?I decided I did not want to paint it.I was stumped on what to do.Then decided to just whether it a bit.I took my palm sander and hit the inside and edges.I really love how this looks like an old piece I added to my cabinets. That chalk board cabinet is hiding my outlet.Yes those brilliant electricians who put that in decided that was a good spot. Not in my book it isn’t!I found this little cabinet and cut a hole in the back. This is what it looks like inside.
Yes I know I did not paint the inside. But there you see the hole and the outlet that we have our laptop plugged into.
Here is a close up of the cubby.
The cabinets are painted pure white by Annie Sloan the same color used throughout my kitchen.I am hoping to install the knobs this weekend.
I am sure you can see the floor and trim are not done yet. They did not finish that part of the floor.I need to find out what was used so I can fix that and also fix that trim too.I have never done that before but I guess I am going to learn!
See that little crystal sconce that is hiding the phone jack that we don’t use!The roses were on sale at our market.Love these mini roses aren’t they sweet!
I am so happy to finally have my kitchen done! Today was not a great day for shooting photos.I am going to take photos of my whole kitchen with better lighting so you can see the whole room together.I am very pleased with it!
